Race weekend Formula Renault 2.0 EuroCUP at Jerez

Ad una settimana dalla tappa finale del campionato ALPS, Cram Motorsport è tornato in azione sul circuito di Jerez De La Frontera per l’ultimo appuntamento della Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. Dopo aver preso parte agli appuntamenti continentali di Budapest, Silverstone e Nurburgring, la squadra di Gabriele e Simone Rosei ha deciso di cimentarsi anche nel round finale spagnolo.
Alla guida della Tatuus il diciannovenne Vasily Romanov, pilota russo che ha fedelmente difeso i colori della compagine lombarda per tutta la stagione. Il week-end dell’Eurocup, proprio come quello dell’ALPS la settimana precedente, era decisivo per l’assegnazione del titolo, andato poi nelle mani di Jack Aitken. Purtroppo un vero e proprio nubifragio si è abbattuto sul tracciato andaluso durante il fine settimana, con condizioni surreali mai riscontrate in precedenza.

Riuscendo ad ottenere comunque il settimo tempo nel Gruppo A per la qualifica 1, Romanov ha potuto prendere il via dalla tredicesima piazzola in griglia, concludendo però la gara al diciannovesimo posto finale. A metà gruppo infatti era pressoché impossibile la visibilità e Vasily ha cercato di portare a casa la vettura senza danni, stessa situazione che lo ha condizionato nella seconda corsa, disputatasi sempre al sabato, dato che eccezionalmente Jerez ospitava tre gare. Giunto ventunesimo sotto la bandiera a scacchi, con oltre trenta partecipanti al via, il russo è poi stato promosso ventesimo per la penalizzazione di Simon Gachet.

Safety-car e bandiere rosse hanno caratterizzato anche la giornata di domenica, dove Vasily aveva ottenuto il diciassettesimo posto in griglia al termine di una qualifica interrotta per oltre un’ora a causa delle abbondanti precipitazioni. Per Romanov nemmeno la possibilità di effettuare un giro lanciato, perché è finito in acquaplaning quando la direzione gara aveva precocemente deciso di riaprire la pit-lane, condizione che ha tratto in inganno anche il campione Aitken.

Un ritiro in gara poi nel pomeriggio, con un tamponamento ed un conseguente braccetto piegato prima, ed un problema elettrico dovuto alle infiltrazioni d’acqua poi, che non lavano via il grande potenziale dimostrato da Cram Motorsport in tutta la stagione agonistica 2015.

One week after the final round of the ALPS championship, Cram Motorsport was back on-track at Jerez De La Frontera for the final round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup championship. After entering the rounds held at Budapest, Silverstone and Nurburgring, the Italian squad, managed by Gabriele and Simone Rosei, decided to line-up for the season finale of the European series.
Driving the Cram-prepared Tatuus car was Russian 19-year-old Vasily Romanov, who served as a full-time regular for the team throughout the season. The Eurocup finale, as happened for the ALPS, was set to be decisive for the title which eventually ended up in the hands of Jack Aitken. Unfortunately then, huge downpours plagued the whole weekend, providing track conditions never seen before.

Managing to score the seventh fastest laptime of Group 1 in Qualifying 1, Romanov was able to take-off from the 13th spot on the grid before ending up 19th. With almost no visibility and treacherous conditions in the midpack, Vasily tried to take his car home with no damage. The same happened on Saturday in Race 2 of the three exceptionally held at Jerez, and Romanov crossed the line 21st out of 30 contenders before being promoted to the top-20 by a penalty assessed to Simon Gachet.

Safety car and red flag conditions were a consistent feature on Sunday too, when Vasily took 17th place on the grid for race 3 in another rain-disrupted session. Unfortunately, we was unable to complete a single flying lap as he ended up aquaplaning after the activity was disrupted. The same type of situation also involved Aitken. In the afternoon, he was forced to retire. At first, he was hit from behind and suffered a bent steering arm, before his car started to struggle with electrical issues due to the precipitations.

Despite the tough finale, Romanov and Cram Motorsport were able to confirm once again their great potential, the same that they showcased throughout the whole season.
